Parent-Sensei Conferences
Around 9:15 or so

How the notoriously rambunctious grandson of the Hokage had managed to knock over an entire shelf of scrolls, he hadn't seen; he'd been out fulfilling his oh-so-difficult duties, and returned to find Sakura looking as if she'd very much like to swear, but instead settling for an overall show of frustration and panic. Whatever the circumstances, such a trivial thing hardly mattered. No need to bother considering all the petty ramifications of Konohamaru's actions. Only people like Umino Iruka cared about things like that.

The shelf whose contents were now covering the floor had not been the one containing the students' files, so he'd helpfully offered to clean up while she continued distributing them. She'd thrown him a rather odd look as she left, no doubt wondering why anyone would volunteer to do something so banal as cleaning, but for the present that was of no consequence.

Haruno Sakura. There was a reason behind this, after all. Thank you, Konohamaru. He glanced at the pink-haired genin's file, storing away the information to add to his collection later. She herself was unremarkable, really. Typical young kunoichi of no real distinction. But any connection to the Uchiha made her vaguely worth considering...as far as Kabuto could tell, Sasuke didn't retun any of Sakura's energy-wasting devotion, but he knew from observation there was still some connection. The flaw in the three-person system. In a village like Sound, the sole purpose of a team was so that if one failed, the others could carry on the mission and achieve it. But here, there were all these ridiculous notions of teamwork and bonds and other such things. Friends, soldiers, comrades-in-arms. Ha. He could care less if Misumi and Yoroi met their untimely ends two months or two minutes from now, except for the inconveniences it would cause in the plan, but these so-called fighters of the Leaf would react somewhat differently. That was certain.

Amazing, really. The effect of loss on people like this--he'd seen it before, in a different context. It was hard not to when you spent a lot of time with Orochimaru-sama in the hold of his own power; testing, exulting, intoxicated by the possibility.

It would be interesting to see these specific individuals experiencing that, or to know when they had.

Pain could be the key to getting someone to do what you wanted; it could also be the key unlocking vast amounts of power. Balancing both was tricky, but Orochimaru-sama had perfected it into an art.

Going off on tangents again. There was something about the contrast between what he was and what he was pretending to be that made him lose his concentration.

Haruno Sakura could be useful in making Uchiha understand certain things, but that was thinking too far ahead. Best to keep certain ideas in the back of his mind for now, and consider them later.

Mm-hmm. He scanned several other files--the genin who were present at the conference tonight, jounin like Shiranui Genma that seemed worth noting, some randomly seen others to get an idea of the variety. The last two he looked over were the most important, although the first held no information that he did not know. Uchiha Sasuke. ...He knew about the Uchiha. He knew quite a lot about the Uchiha. The last he paused before looking at, but nonetheless picked up, if only for a few seconds. Uzumaki Naruto... Stay away from the fox, that's what Orochimaru-sama had said, but then again he knew what Orochimaru thought of anything touching Akatsuki. Uzumaki might influence Sasuke-kun. He'd definitely have to observe that, and also the Kyuubi-vessel in his own right. Too interesting, too historically important, too dangerous not to take note of. This really was becoming quite a productive evening...

...He'd looked for Hatake Kakashi's file, but with no success as of yet.

"This is going to take forever," he said aloud, not entirely sure what he was referring to. Eyeing the only slightly diminished chaos of the room, he went back to doing what he'd said he'd do--for the moment.
This one goes here, next to that one, in this section...

*pokes his head into the room where the scrolls are being stored* Kabuto-kun? Sakura-chan told me what Konohamaru-kun had done. *rubs the back of his head and stares at the mess* Another one of his ridiculous missions, I'd guess. *sighs irritably and picks up a few scrolls*

Next time I'm locking him in a damn closet. *mutters under his breath as he collects a few more scrolls near the door*
*chuckles* I suspect the Hokage would think very little of that, Iruka-sensei. *glances at a scroll, then scans the shelf for its location* *wry smile* Brilliant idea though it might be. Amazing, hm? One small person managing this. He must be quite a handful.

*puts away the scroll, than goes back to gathering them off the floor* But I'm fine handling this, Iruka-sensei, you hardly need to get involved. No doubt you've got a thousand things to do...*eyes door* Unless, of course, you're fleeing the parents, in which case I desperately need help. ^^
If you think this is amazing, you should see some of the hell Naruto cooked up when he was younger. Konohamaru is tame in regards to that.

Hmm . . . "fleeing" is a strong word, Kabuto-kun. I prefer taking a much needed mental break. *winces* I'm just lucky that the Hokage came by earlier in the night. He'd see through the clone I have out there in a second.
You deserve it, that's for sure. I doubt there'd be many who'd jump at the chance to be in your place right now. *shakes head* So much organization, and those parents. The glimpses I've had are certainly enough. ^^ ...Worse than Konohamaru, hm? Whatever could Naruto-kun have tried, to outdo him? *curious*
*laughs weakly* I seem to be hearing that quite a bit lately. Kakashi-sensei seems to think along the same lines that you do. *chuckles again* I'm not doing anything differently than anyone else.

*sits back on his heels, one scroll dangling from his hand* What hasn't Naruto done? There's his patented Sexy no Jutsu that he enjoys deploying on occasion. *rolls his eyes* Just recently he painted the Hokage overlook. Before that, he did anything and everything. *pauses a moment* Most of that is common knowledge by now but, genin or not, Kabuto doesn't need to know everything about Naruto's behavior. *grins and turns back to Kabuto* Konohamaru does take direction from Naruto well, I can say that much.
Since I haven't been seeing too much obvious chaos around here, though, one can assume that he's become at least vaguely more mature-? *arranging scrolls on the shelf* ...Oh, that's where it goes. *coughs* Naruto, that is.
*carries a bundle of scrolls to the shelf* Well, he still has quite a way to go but he's getting there. He's improving. But he's . . . he can't be where Kakashi thinks he is. *frowns slightly* I haven't been able to see much of it, however. I've only read the reports as they've come in.

Heh. Jealous much? Idiot chuunin.
Must everyone be so interconnected? Kakashi-san doesn't strike me as the type to let him get away with much. Sasuke and Naruto, Iruka and Naruto, Kakashi and Sasuke and Naruto, Kakashi and Iruka, this community...the idea makes me wonder exactly who or what Orochimaru-sama left behind besides the obvious...
Heh. No, I don't suppose he would. I have yet to see him in action so I can't say for certain. Naruto's only complaint seems to be that Kakashi-sensei's always late. *face colors slightly* And that he can't seem to hide those books of his.
Considering he created something called 'Sexy no Jutsu', it seems highly doubtful that Naruto finds Icha Icha offensive. *amused*
Kakashi...one could almost think that...
Those seem to have become more popular recently, although I admit I see Kakashi-san reading them more than anyone. I haven't read one, myself. Have you, Iruka-sensei?
Gah! Why does everyone keep asking me this?! *reddens* Uh, n-no. No, I haven't. But I . . . uh, have to agree with you that I really only see Kakashi-sensei with that book.
*tries not to smile* He certaintly does read it a lot. It makes one wonder what about it is so intriguing. *shrugs, picking up a few more scrolls* How did he pass the chuunin exam? But forgive me for asking, Iruka-sensei; it was a rude question.
*blinks* Oh, don't worry about it, Kabuto-kun. It wasn't...rude. Just abrupt. Urgh. I need to stop blushing at things like that.

*slides two scrolls into their spaces* But, I suppose, considering the life we lead it's a good thing to have something relaxing to take your mind off everything else. I assume that's why he reads those. Gods, I hope that's why.
OOC: I hope that's why, too, Iruka-sensei.XD

That makes sense. *scans a shelf for a few seconds, than puts a scroll into its place* Responsibility seems to equate with stress rather frequently, doesn't it? For others, for your own position, what-have-you. *goes back to the scrolls on the floor* There are times when I'm relieved to still be a genin, really.
*smiles faintly* He's definitely observant. I suppose that comes with being at his status for as long as he has. I still can't understand why he hasn't advanced. He seems intelligent enough. True, there is some comfort in the genin status. I won't lie and say it doesn't get harder here on out. I can only imagine the stress our jounin suffer from. Were it not for certain circumstances, I might actually be in their place.

*sighs and picks up another scroll* It's a sacrifice we offer, however. Personally, I'd take on as much stress and pain as humanly possible if it meant no more of my comrades would die. Such a ridiculous wish. Impossible.

[OOC: I hope you don't mind but I'm slipping in something from the AU in regards to Iruka not being jounin. *ebil grin* It doesn't really warp anything but Iruka. And that's not even the right description of it. *snerks*]
That seems something of an contradiction, however, Iruka-sensei. The possibility, shall we say, the danger of a comrade's death--isn't that a central cause of the stress, and pain, and so on?

...What the hell am I saying? The genin of Konoha doesn't speak like this. Just because the man's naive doesn't mean he's stupid. Getting too comfortable, aren't I...in a way, that's more dangerous to me that people like Hatake Kakashi. What an idiotic thing, to underestimate someone while being vastly underestimated.

It's nice to hear these defenses of the Konoha mindset from such a prime example. ...Orochimaru-sama must know, though, from having grown up here, that even as they're being destroyed they will not surrender.

[OOC: Oh. I mind ever so much. I'm going positively ballistic. ^^ No problem. I mean, dude, look what I'm doing to Kabuto. canon!Kabuto is probably going to end up being all "I r villain, I keel j00" and get killed by Naruto after a maniacal laughter session or something. *sigh* My Kabuto's like..."well, I'm bored. I think I'll have a philosophical discussion with Iruka! Twice!" XD]
*holds onto the smile* It...can be. The insight...I'm a little surprised by it. Though, when I was his age I was chuunin. Still...a genin wouldn't be exposed to so much, would he? Odd. However, I think the loss is often what exacerbates the stress that already exists. It can change the path you were meant to travel if the loss is particularly sharp. I've felt that once already. I can't even... *falls quiet for a moment*

*takes a breath rolls the scroll in his hand* Stress can be hidden for only so long, Kabuto-kun. Without...hobbies -- even as embarrassing as Kakashi-sensei's -- that stress can explode at the wrong time.
...I'd imagine so, Iruka-sensei. *shivers* It's a frightening prospect. So Iruka...? Something there. Couldn't have been too bad, though, or he'd be...harder. More like Sasuke-kun, or...

*more quietly* I can't possibly understand what it's like--loss, that is--but I know you can see where it's been. ...Is there something that Kakashi-san is trying to forget?
*eyes narrow briefly* Kakashi-sensei? I couldn't say for certain. That man isn't very easy to read. Why the interest in Kakashi? The jounin is odd but not enough for this. I don't know. Maybe I'm worn out.

Loss can be difficult to get over. Either you dwell on it day in and day out -- Sasuke... -- or you find a new outlet for it. For some, it's merely a matter of replacing that grief with a new purpose. A new path, if you will. As I chose to.

But it's those who...explode that are most dangerous. It takes so little and there are no warnings, it seems. I could have been one of those people. I might have been you, Mizuki. *frowns as he slides another scroll in place*

[OOC: So, the AU thing was that the only reason Iruka didn't move on to jounin was that his father -- had he not felt more needed as a jounin -- would have been an instructor. The idea that it's all he has left of his father so he stays as chuunin. Too much?]
Well, he has a basic understanding of that, at least. That's what comes out of not watching people closely enough. ...Fail to understand 'those who explode' and you get Orochimaru-sama.

*looks slightly taken aback, noticing Iruka's expression* You make it sound as if it's an imminent threat. *blinks* Has such a thing occured recently?

[OOC: Ha ha, Kabuto's been out of the village for awhile off 'training' with his 'instructor' from 'another village'. He knows absolutely nothing about that one incident. XD I need a new stick to whack Kabuto with. And that sounds plausible enough to me. People like to remember their parents and stuff...we know this because people's parents keep dying all over the place...*eyes Naruto* May I never have a kid in Naruto!world. I'll have like, at least a fifty percent chance of being doomed.]
*glances at Kabuto* Imminent? No, I wouldn't go that far. But, *sighs* the possibility will always be there; no matter how much we'd like to believe otherwise. Just one more thing shinobi must come to understand, I suppose.

I...uh -- Wait. Ibiki would slaughter me if I say anything about Mizuki. He's warned me enough by now. *turns away* No. Nothing has happened lately.

*coughs and puts away two more scrolls* This must be a rather dull conversation for you, Kabuto-kun. *grins faintly*

[OOC: And Iruka just continues on, only slightly unnerved by how astute this unfortunate genin happens to be. =3 Child in Naruto!world = instant death. XD And...does this sound like a plausible Iruka answer? *is tired*]
Something has most definitely happened lately. Why would you think that, Iruka-sensei? ^^ I don't find it dull at all. I find it informative. Then again, perhaps that's why I'm not all that social, usually. *stands up, sighing and putting away the three scrolls in his hand* Misumi and Yoroi do become tiresome, always talking about different types of kunai and such.

I like to talk about things that aren't usually talked about. Otherwise I'll never learn anything, will I? *shrugs*

*privately thinking over Iruka's last comment* The possibility is always there, isn't it, Orochimaru-sama? That you may direct the explosion where you wish it to go.

[OOC: Yep. I don't think you ever need to worry about Iruka being plausible; you do him really well. Just let me know if Kabuto starts getting out of whack. o_o; Damn underdeveloped characters with not enough screen time...]

*Knocks on the half-open storage room door and peeks in* Yo! *rises hand in greeting*

*looks over the fallen shelf and all the scrolls laying around* What the hell happened here? I came here right away when I heard that terrible sound of the shelf falling over. Right after I had finished my coffee, that is. ^^

Oh, you must have missed Sakura-chan. She'd said she was going to inform you. According to her, Konohamaru managed to make his way in here while we were both out delivering scrolls... ^^; Amazing what he can do, isn't it? I was just cleaning up. *gestures to the mess* Don't worry about it. ^^
*Thoughtful look* Konohamaru-kun, huh? First Naruto, and when he finally manages to graduate we get another one just as bad as him. I really feel sorry for Iruka-sensei, he seems to always get the most troublesome ones.

You sure you two can handle it? Coz' if there's any problem just tell me, 'kay?

*looks at the fallen shelf out of the corner of his eye* Those scrolls... It's as if someone had been moving around them. Could this guy have done it? *eyes venture back to Kabuto* Nah, unlikely. But it's still good that the more important ones are stored elsewhere.

Well I'll get going now, just call me if you need something. *waves*
